Bhubaneswar: On Saturday, four interstate burglars were apprehended by the Twin City Commissionerate Police in Odisha's capital for reportedly breaking into cars and fleeing with valuables.

Surya Mudaliar, Rahul Rao, Aditya Kainri, and Shankar Swami have been identified. They are all from the Hooghly district of West Bengal and have ties to the Tirchy district. They were arrested with at least Rs 52,000 in cash, a vanity bag, a vehicle, a glass-breaking weapon, a mobile phone, and a laptop.

According to Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh, the gang was active during Durga Puja. "They would frequently visit the state to pilfer laptops, cash, and other goods hidden inside cars by shattering the windows in markets. It is a Bengal-based transnational gang that has perpetrated crimes in Bihar, Assam, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. "They also misled individuals and plundered them," he added.

According to the DCP, they used to stay at a resort during the theft and escape the area afterward. "It was a difficult case since they kept changing sites. During earlier attacks, they had managed to flee. We were again tipped off about the group organizing a crime, so a special unit raided and caught them," he said.

In Bhubaneswar, ten criminal cases have been filed against the four accused, including five at the Capital police station, four at the Saheed Nagar police station, and one at the Kharabela Nagar police station. In addition, a case has been filed against them at Cuttack's Malgodown police station.

"A police squad will travel to West Bengal to catch additional members of this gang and seize other stolen stuff. "We will also contact our counterparts in other states," said the DCP.
