Jajpur: On Tuesday, the Additional District and Sessions Court in Jajpur, Odisha, found a man guilty of murdering a juvenile child for tantrik activities and sentenced him to life in jail.

Dipak Barik of Rajendrapur village under Kuakhia police station was convicted for the murder of 8-year-old Abhisek Nayak on February 26, 2015, according to Rajendra Prasad Nayak, additional public prosecutor.

A community feast was organised by the family of a deceased villager as part of customs on the tragic day. Abhisek, his family, and Dipak were also in attendance. Abhisek and Dipak had been spotted by the villagers assisting in the service of the people. However, after some time, neither of them could be found.

When Abhisek did not return home in the evening, his family looked for him everywhere but couldn't find him. Dipak was likewise absent from his home. Police investigated the area after being notified, but were unable to locate Abhisek.

The body of Abhisek, a Class III student, was discovered floating in a pond near a Devi temple on the village's outskirts the next morning. His neck was adorned with a garland, and he had a vermilion mark on his forehead.

The body was recovered by police and taken to a morgue for an autopsy. Following Abhisek's parents' allegations that Dipak was engaged in his murder using tantrik rituals, authorities raided his home and discovered human bones as well as artefacts connected to tantrik practises such as books and other items. Dipak was also detained.

Dipak used to inform the villagers that he would make human sacrifice as part of tantrik rituals to attain wealth and success, according to the extra public prosecutor.

The court announced its verdict on the basis of evidence and statements of 24 witnesses in the case. Besides sentencing Dipak to life imprisonment, the court announced 7 years of imprisonment for attempting to destroy the evidence. It also imposed a penalty of Rs 35,000 on him.
