Bhubaneswar: Two women Maoists who had surrendered earlier were married to the life partners of their choice on Sunday in Odisha's Kandhamal with the help of police.

Sapnita Patamajhi (Nandini) is one of them. She renounced left-wing extremism in 2019 after working with Maoists for more than 18 months. She had surrendered to Kandhamal's Superintendent of Police.

Similarly, Phulbati Usendi (Karuna) spent 13 years with Maoists until leaving the illegal organization in 2021. She had turned herself in to the Director General of Police.

According to police sources, both Nandini and Karuna were rehabilitated through government programs and earned a living with dignity.

Kandhamal police provided their support and assisted in their wedding after learning of their intention to marry. On Sunday, their marriages were attended by police officers, friends, and family.

Kandhamal's district police congratulated the newlyweds and asked members of the LWE movement to abandon violence and join the mainstream.
