Puri: Two Italian nationals and a woman were arrested on Friday in connection with an internet harassment complaint filed by an Italian professor who runs an ashram in Chandanpur, Puri district.

Italians Fabriziorocco Donati and Esposito Teo Matteo alias Mandali Bhadra, as well as a local woman, have been booked.

Rombola Alfredo (71), an Italian professor who has lived in Odisha for the past 25 years dealing with the impoverished, claims that the accused defamed his family by creating phoney social media accounts in his name. Alfredo has also claimed that the accused has threatened him with death.

Police said they were contacting Facebook and YouTube to have the offensive content against Alfredo and his family members removed.

"We have filed a complaint under sections 500 (defamation), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (act committed by a group of people with a common goal) of the Indian Penal Code. The charges are still being investigated. Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh told media that efforts are being made to block fraudulent social media handles.

Donati and Matteo, according to the police, are currently in Italy.

According to the media, Matteo and a US national were arrested by the Crime Branch in Puri in August 2000 for allegedly sexually assaulting an Austrian kid.

Alfredo, who is married to an Odia woman, worked among the underprivileged in Berhampur and Kandhamal before relocating to Puri, where he now works with the residents of the slums of Penthakata and Baliapanda.
