Bhubaneswar: The death toll from East Midnapore's illegal firecracker factory blast has risen to ten, with the prime accused, Krishnapada alias Bhanu Bag, succumbing to burns on Friday at a private hospital in Odisha's Cuttack.
Bag, his son, and nephew had been detained by West Bengal police the day before. They were unable to relocate Bag, the owner of the firecracker factory where an explosion on May 16 killed nine people and injured seven others, to Bengal because he had suffered 70% burns and was in critical condition.
K. Amarnath, the district police superintendent of East Midnapore, confirmed his death and stated that efforts are being made to return Bhanu to West Bengal.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed over the investigation to the criminal investigation department (CID) hours after the blast and promised strict action against the suspects.
Bhanu, a well-known name in the illegal firecracker business, was charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 304 (causing death by negligence) and sections of the Fire Services Act.
