Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar confirmed that he received the resignation letter from Mohanta on Wednesday. He stated, "She has personally handed me her resignation letter, which is in accordance with the constitution. Therefore, I have accepted the resignation of Shrimati Mamata Mohanta, the member representing the state of Odisha, with immediate effect."
It is being reported that Mamata Mohanta, who has resigned from her Rajya Sabha membership, is likely to join the BJP, according to sources within the party. With the BJP holding a majority in the Odisha assembly, it is highly probable that their candidate will be elected in the upcoming bypoll following Mohanta's resignation.
In her resignation letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Mohanta explicitly stated, "I hereby tender my resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha, effective today, July 31, 2024. I have made this decision consciously." She also expressed gratitude for the opportunities to raise important public issues in the House.
Taking to her official social media platform, Mohanta announced, "I have resigned from the post of Rajya Sabha member today. The Biju Janata Dal Party president chose me as a member of the District Council and a member of the Rajya Sabha and gave me the opportunity to serve my district."
In her resignation letter to Naveen Patnaik, Mohanta mentioned, "I hereby resign from the Primary Membership of Biju Janata Dal today, i.e. July 31, 2024. I sincerely express my gratitude to your good self for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of Mayurbhanj and to take the cause of Odisha at the national level." She added further, "However, I feel that there is no requirement of the services of myself as well as my community in the Biju Janata Dal. Therefore, I have taken this hard decision in the public interest."
