Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a demonstration in Bhubaneswar on Monday to intensify its protest against frequent power outages and alleged billing irregularities.

Alleging billing irregularities, BJP leaders and workers claimed that instead of issuing monthly bills, the power distribution company has been billing on a 40-day cycle.

A large number of BJP activists shouting slogans and carrying banners and placards gheraoed the Tata Power office in Odisha's capital. According to sources, a scuffle erupted after saffron party activists attempted to lock the main gate of the power distribution company.

According to the protesters, the company is now collecting electricity bills from customers on a 40-day billing cycle. As a result, consumers are being charged at higher slab rates for 10 extra days that could have been charged at much lower rates in the following monthly bill.

The BJP's Bhubaneswar district president, Babu Singh, claimed that despite a Rs 20,000 crore grant for improving power infrastructure, no concrete steps have been taken.

Despite the fact that the Odisha government claims that the state has a power surplus and that Rs 20000 crore has been spent on infrastructure development, people face power outages, particularly during peak summer months, according to another BJP leader.
