Bhubaneswar: With the formation of a low pressure system over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea at 8.30 a.m. on Monday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra predicted that a cyclonic storm could form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the eastcentral Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea around May 10.

"The system will continue to move north-northwestward until the morning of May 12th." "It will most likely concentrate into a Depression tomorrow and become a cyclone by May 10," he predicted.

Mohapatra added that it is likely to intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm and shift track from May 12 to the coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

“The system currently lies near Andaman and Nicobar Islands and will have an impact on Southeast Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea and Nicobar Island, where wind speed may reach up to 60kmph. There will isolated heavy rainfall at Nicobar islands. The wind speed will increase from May 9 evening. No warnings have been issued for Odisha,” he added.

On Tuesday, the IMD will issue another system update.

When it becomes a cyclonic storm, the system will be named Cyclone Mocha, a name suggested by Yemen. It derives from the Yemeni city of Mocha (or Mokha) on the Red Sea coast, which is credited with introducing coffee to the world over 500 years ago. Mocha is a warm chocolate-flavored beverage that is a coffee variant.
