Dhenkanal: Armed miscreants allegedly murdered a former panchayat samiti member in Odisha's Dhenkanal district's Kamakhyanagar area.

Sarbeswar rout, a former member of the Dighi panchayat samiti in the district, was identified as the deceased.

According to sources, a group of armed miscreants attacked Rout on a motorbike late Sunday night while he was returning home from a cashew orchard in Dighi, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kamakhyanagar police station.

Rout, who had suffered serious injuries, was taken to a nearby hospital and then transferred to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters (DHH) Hospital. Doctors at the DHH, however, declared him dead.

Though the motive for the murder has yet to be determined, police believe it was motivated by political rivalry and past animosity.

The body was sent for a postmortem, and police have begun an investigation into the incident. As part of the probe, a scientific team also visited the location.

According to police, five people have been detained in connection with the incident. The five are being questioned.
