The Israeli army claimed that the school housed a Hamas command center, justifying the strike. The attack occurred during dawn prayers, resulting in a high number of casualties, despite purported efforts to minimize harm to civilians.

More than 100 Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli strike on a Gaza school sheltering displaced people, according to the official Palestinian news agency. The Israeli army stated that it had targeted a Hamas command center. The strike occurred while the displaced people were performing Fajr (dawn) prayers, leading to a rapid increase in casualties, as per the Hamas-run Gaza government media office.
The Israeli army's statement mentioned that its air forces "struck a command and control center that served as a hideout for Hamas terrorists and commanders." They added, "The IAF precisely struck Hamas terrorists operating within a Hamas command and control center embedded in the Al-Taba'een school, which is located adjacent to a mosque in Daraj Tuffah and serves as a shelter for the residents of Gaza City."
The statement highlighted that numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence information.
