Dhenkanal: An under-trial prisoner (UTP) in Odisha's Dhenkanal jail died while receiving treatment in a hospital, according to his family, who claims he was beaten to death.
The deceased has been identified as Athani Dehuri (42) of Beshalia village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the district's Sadar police station.
According to sources, Athani was arrested on Sunday by the Excise department on suspicion of smuggling liquor and was taken into custody the next day.
He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after becoming ill in prison. During the treatment, however, the doctor declared him dead.
His family and relatives have claimed that Athani was tortured in jail and that he was beaten to death. The family also claimed that they were not informed of Athani's hospitalization.
The incident's family members have demanded a high-level investigation.
