On Wednesday, Childline officials received information about a wedding ceremony in which a minor girl was to marry a 25-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh at a temple.
The Cantonment police station was notified. According to a police official, a police team arrived at the temple, foiled the marriage attempt, and rescued the minor girl.
However, before the police arrived at the temple, the groom fled. The police have detained four people, including the girl's family members and the case's mediators.
According to IANS, the minor girl was brought before the District Child Welfare Committee and her statement was recorded.
Childline member Narayan Sukla stated that when their team arrived at the temple, the mob gheraoed them and assisted the groom in fleeing. The girl, however, was rescued and taken to the Cantonment police station. He stated that the girl is only 16 years old and passed her matriculation exam last year.
He claimed that the marriage was taking place without the girl's consent. The mastermind behind this child marriage is a mediator, he alleged.
