Cuttack: Unidentified armed miscreants allegedly grabbed gold jewellery and cash from a merchant in Odisha's Cuttack district on Wednesday after firing fire in the air.

The robbery allegedly occurred in broad daylight near the Matagajpur railway level crossing, which is under the jurisdiction of the Kandarpur police station.

According to early information, a group of six bike-riding youngsters stopped a gold trader, named as Bikas Patra of Hatasahi, and attempted to rob him of a bag containing gold jewelry and other valuables.

When the merchant gave resistance, the attackers allegedly opened fire in the air. While Patra narrowly avoided being wounded by the bullets, the miscreants fled with the goods.

When the event was reported, a team of police officers was dispatched to the scene right away. Police have initiated an investigation and are working to identify the perpetrators.

The value of the plundered items has yet to be determined. Police are waiting for more information.
