Bhubaneswar: While schools in Odisha will reopen on June 21, collectors in seven districts have been asked to switch to morning classes or extend holidays due to the current heatwave.

"As a precautionary measure, collectors of Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Angul, Sonepur, and Balangir are authorized to shift to morning classes and declare holidays if the situation so requires," wrote S&ME department Additional Secretary Durga Prasad Mohapatra.

While the IMD has stated that conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to arrive in the state in two to three days, the coastal districts have seen a drop in temperature over the last two days.

Sundargarh had the highest temperature of 44.8 degrees Celsius on Monday, followed by Jharsuguda (41.6), Rourkela (40.8), Sambalpur, Titlagarh, and Jajpur at 40.5 degrees Celsius, and Hirakud at 40.1 degrees Celsius.

The summer vacation was declared on April 21 due to the state's hot weather. The schools were supposed to reopen on June 19, but the date was pushed back due to the current heatwave.
