Bhubaneswar: On Friday, a 34-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old child from New Delhi Railway Station (NDRS).
Vikas Verma, a native of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, has been identified as the accused.
According to reports, the accused saw a woman waiting on a platform with three children who had come from Indore to catch a train to Cuttack on Wednesday morning. He befriended the youngest child by offering him some food before disappearing with him. Verma, a goldsmith by trade, took the child to Katra in Jammu that night, then returned to NDRS the next morning and boarded the Shri Shakti Express, where he was apprehended. He intended to take the child to his home country.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) Apoorva Gupta was quoted by PTI as saying that during the investigation, police scoured CCTV footage from the station premises and spotted an unknown person carrying the kidnapped child.
Verman had to close his business last year due to huge losses and heavy debt and had since been working as a vendor on trains. He added that he had lost his child after divorcing his wife in 2021.
