Bhubaneswar: The chief secretaries of both states met on Tuesday to address different topics ahead of a vital meeting between Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik and his counterpart from Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The meeting was conducted at Loka Seva Bhawan in the city by Odisha chief secretary SC Mahapatra and Andhra chief secretary Adityanath Das to lay the ground for the two chief ministers' meeting on the inter-state border dispute, river feuds, and other major issues. According to insiders, the meeting included senior officials from both countries.

The chief ministers' meeting, which is set to take place in the evening, is expected to cover thorny subjects such as the Neradi barrage, the Janjavathi project, and the disputed 21 villages under the Kotia panchayat.

For a long time, the two states have been at odds over the Neradi and Janjavathi barrages. While Andhra Pradesh claims that the projects will assist farmers, Odisha claims that they will be disastrous for hundreds of villages throughout the state.

Similarly, Kotia has remained a problematic topic, resulting in fighting between the two states on a regular basis. Odisha has objected strongly to Andhra Pradesh's repeated attempts to intervene in the panchayat's affairs by seeking to implement its welfare initiatives.

Due to the deterioration of relations between the neighbouring states over these concerns, Jagan had written to Naveen, requesting a meeting to settle the issues peacefully. However, because to the COVID epidemic, the conference was postponed.
