The Commissionerate Police have arrested the former director of an education consultancy firm for allegedly duping around 65 Ukraine-returned medical students out of Rs 43 lakh under the guise of assisting them in obtaining transcript certificates (TCs) from universities in Ukraine so that they could continue their studies in India.

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police have arrested the former director of an education consultancy firm for allegedly duping around 65 Ukraine-returned medical students out of Rs 43 lakh under the guise of assisting them in obtaining transcript certificates (TCs) from universities in Ukraine so that they could continue their studies in India.

Swadhin Mohapatra of Bhutia village in Bhandaripokhari, Bhadrak, has been detained. From April 2019 to February this year, he lived at Gatikrushna Green housing society in Ranga Bazaar and worked as a director of Bhubaneswar-based Global Focus Education Pvt Limited.

According to police sources, Mohapatra reportedly received Rs 43.72 lakh from students between November and December last year using his mother's bank account without the knowledge of the organization. On September 8, the MD of the consultant firm, Abdul Zaheer Baig, filed a complaint with police. An inquiry was initiated.

The accused has been charged under sections 420, 294, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, and authorities have started the process of freezing his bank accounts. According to the sources, more inquiry is underway to determine the involvement of others in the situation.
