Odisha-Born IRS Officer Appointed CBDT Chairman
Bhubaneswar: J B Mohapatra, an officer with the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) who was born in Odisha, has been named head of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
On Tuesday, the Cabinet Appointments Committee (ACC) approved his nomination.
The CBDT, in addition to the chairman, sets policies for the Income Tax Department and can include up to six members.
After incumbent P C Mody's prolonged tenure ended in July, the 1985-batch officer was granted the additional job of CBDT chairman.
There was talk at the time that he would be nominated as the regular CBDT chairman by the Prime Minister-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in the following days (ACC).
Mohapatra will step down in April 2020.
Prior to these positions, he was the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region's principal chief commissioner of Income Tax.
