Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam operators in Odisha's Sambalpur district opened four additional sluice gates on Saturday as the reservoir's water level continued to rise following heavy rain in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi river.

This allows excess water to be discharged from the reservoir via 26 of the 64 sluice gates.

According to official sources, the dam's reservoir water level rose due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi river. To discharge the floodwater, authorities had to open four more reservoir sluice gates.

According to the Special Relief Commissioner's office, the reservoir's water level is around 627 feet, compared to its maximum capacity of 630 feet. The reservoir's average input and outflow of water is 3.89 lakh cusecs.

A warning has also been issued in districts downstream of the Mahanadi. The Mahandi has a water flow of 6,69,000 cubic feet per second at Mundali, 6,74,500 cubic feet per second at Barmul, 6,46,000 cubic feet per second at Khairmal, and 47,400 cubic feet per second at Belgaon, according to the report.

Flood-like conditions have formed in six panchayats of Cuttack's Banki as the Mahanadi's water level rises. Water in excess of 2 feet is said to be rushing over the Hulhula bridge in the block.

Communication between Subarnapur panchayat and Banki block has been disrupted, and a similar situation has been reported in other panchayats in Tigiria block, according to sources.

Notably, Odisha had 217.1 mm of rain between September 1 and 16, compared to the monthly average of 231.9 mm. In the last 24 hours, 25 blocks have received more than 10 mm of rain, with Reamal block in Deogarh district receiving the most at 45.4 mm.
