Bhubaneswar: Seven railway employees, including the three arrested by the CBI, have been suspended in connection with the triple train crash at Bahanaga in Odisha's Balasore district, which killed 294 people.

South-Eastern Railway (SER) General Manager Anil Kumar Mishra announced on Wednesday that all seven employees have been suspended with immediate effect.

This was revealed after the South-Eastern Railway General Manager and DRM visited the railway stations of Bahanaga Bazar and Balasore. Senior Railway officials also paid a visit to Gopinathpur Railway Station alongside BJP MP Pratap Sarangi.

The CBI has arrested three Railway officials: senior Section Engineer (signal) Arun Kumar Mohanta, section engineer Mohammad Amir Khan, and technician Pappu Kumar. They have been charged under CrPC Sections 304 and 201.

The CBI has placed the three on another four-day remand after concluding that the three Railway officials were responsible for the accident. Furthermore, the reports stated that they attempted to conceal the evidence.

According to the inquiry report of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Eastern Circle, the deadly train mishap at Bahanaga Station occurred due to lapses in the signaling circuit alteration carried out at the station's North Signal Goomty in the past.

It should be noted that in one of the country's worst train accidents, 294 people were killed and approximately 1,200 others were injured. On the night of June 2, two superfast trains - the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and the Bengaluru-Howrah Express - and a goods train collided.
