Bhubaneswar: In a first, Wildlife Reserve officials seized rare species of turtles from a hotel in Odisha's capital, Nayapalli.

Three of them, according to sources, are red-eared slider turtles, an exotic animal, and two are flap shell turtles, a vulnerable species protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. According to an official, keeping these Schedule-I animals is a punishable offense under the Wildlife Protection Act.

He also stated that a case had been filed and that a summons had been issued to the hotel manager and staff for questioning. "We are investigating the source of these turtles and those responsible," he said, adding that this is the first such case reported in the Chandaka wildlife range.
