Bhubaneswar: At least seven new cases of scrub typhus have been identified in Odisha's Sundargarh district, where the highly contagious disease looks to be spreading quickly.

With the discovery of new cases, the total number of scrub typhus patients in Sundargarh this year has risen to 169, according to Sundargarh's Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Kanhucharan Nayak.

The majority of the patients are from the Sundargarh Sadar and Balishankara areas. Scrub typhus is said to have killed one patient in the district.

According to the CDMO, an abundant supply of medicines is available for patients, and a dedicated team of doctors is ready to attend to patients in the area.

A number of people in the district are experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, and chest pain. According to the CDMO, ANM and ASHA personnel have been asked to raise public awareness about the dangerous illness.

With the state government urging district health officials to focus on preventive measures to halt the spread of the virus, he said steps had been done to raise public awareness. "ANM and ASHA workers are visiting homes to raise awareness about prevention." Surveillance and testing of suspected patients has also been increased," he said.

The infection has also spread to Bargarh, another district in western Odisha. So far, the infection has taken the lives of six people.

Meanwhile, on Friday, six new cases of scrub typhus were discovered at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (Vimsar) in Burla. Two of the six patients were admitted to the hospital, while the other four were given medication and told to stay at home. The patients come from several areas in western Odisha. According to doctors, all of the patients' conditions are stable.

According to official sources in Vimsar, the hospital conducts up to 100 scrub typhus tests per day, with a 5% positivity rate.
