Berhampur: On Monday, a woman died and her husband is fighting for his life after the couple allegedly attempted suicide at their home in the Patapur area of Berhampur in Odisha's Ganjam district.
According to sources, the incident occurred when the teacher couple allegedly consumed poison at their home in Dengadi, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Patpur police station. Shailendri Mohanty was identified as the deceased, while her husband Jayasen Mohanty is being treated at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
Nilendri taught at Kachkhandi Primary School in Berhampur, whereas Jayasen works in a school outside of Ganjam district.
Though the exact reason for the couple's extreme action has yet to be determined, it is suspected that they did so after losing money in online gambling games.
An investigation into the incident has been launched, and a clear picture is expected to emerge soon, according to police.
