Nayagarh: A woman died under mysterious circumstances eight years after her marriage in the Itamati area of Odisha's Nayagarh district, with her family alleging that she was murdered for dowry.
Phina Pradhan, who married Rocky Pradhan of Itamati in 2015, has been identified as the deceased. Her father, Panchu Pradhan, and other family members claimed that they had met her in-laws' dowry demands at the time of marriage.
He also claimed that his daughter's in-laws put pressure on her to bring more dowry a few years after their marriage. The couple frequently fought over the issue.
The deceased's family claimed that she was murdered on June 19 and that her in-laws took her to the crematory without informing them. They claimed that her last rites were performed in haste in order to destroy evidence.
The woman's family has filed a complaint with the Itamati police station, demanding that those responsible for her death be arrested. Panchu Pradhan claimed that his daughter was beaten to death for failing to arrange a dowry of Rs 2 lakh.
Police detained Rocky for questioning and launched an investigation based on the complaint. According to police, a case has been filed and an investigation is underway.
