Berhampur: A rival group is accused of murdering two people by hacking them to death on Monday night in a village in the Ganjam region of Odisha.

Sources claim that Mithun Bhuyan of Sunarijhola village, under the jurisdiction of Kabisuryanagar police station, and his brother-in-law Lipun Swain of Nuagada village, under the jurisdiction of Hinjilicut police station, were attacked when they were returning home in the area of Sunarijhola village.

Mithun and Lipun were hurried to the Kabisuryanagar Community Health Center (CHC) by the locals. They were afterwards transported to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where they eventually passed away from their wounds.

Following accusations from the surviving family members, the police detained four people, including Rohit and Janaki Bhuyan, in this case and collected a pistol and spent ammunition from the scene.

The younger brother of Mithun claimed that Lipun and Mithun were attacked by about 15 people who were carrying swords and lathis. He has named six of the assailants.

He added that Mithun was the target of an attempted attack two months ago, but he was able to flee. At the time, Mithun had filed a FIR at the police station.

According to the authorities, Mithun and Lipun were attacked after they had assaulted Janaki and Rohit. Threatening Janaki and his family, Mithun and Lipun had come to his home with a pistol and fired three shots into the air in front of it. After a while, Mithun and Lipun also attacked Rohit and Janaki, resulting in head injuries for the latter.

According to the authorities, Mithun is facing 7 active criminal cases for murder, extortion, dacoity, riots, and attempted murder.
