Bhubaneswar: Four cyber criminals have been arrested in Odisha for duping a man out of Rs 14 lakh by promising lucrative returns through bitcoin trading online.

Police identified the accused as Vivekanand Mallick, Sapan Kumar Dalei, Sunil Kumar Das, and Bijan Kumar Panda, all of whom are from the Balasore district.

In addition to apprehending the suspects, cyber police officers seized Rs 39 lakh in bank accounts, 10 ATM cards, 5 passbooks, 7 cheque books, a laptop, four mobile phones, and a SIM card from them.

The racket was busted as a result of a complaint filed by Pramod Sahu of Bhubaneswar's Chintamaniswar area. According to the complaint, Sahu was contacted by fraudsters who promised him lakhs of rupees for liking and sharing videos on Telegram.

The victim joined the group after paying Rs 1,000 and received a suitable return. After gaining his trust, the accused demanded Rs 50,000 and received Rs 60,000 in return. Following that, the fraudsters persuaded him to invest Rs 5 lakh in Bitcoin, and Sahu did so after being promised Rs 7 lakh in return. The victims were enticed by the offer and invested the money.

However, Sahu was unable to withdraw the funds and contacted the accused, who asked him to deposit additional funds up to Rs 14 lakh, citing several processes required for money withdrawal in the trade. Even after depositing Rs 14 lakh, the victim was unable to withdraw the funds and realized he was trapped. The accused had also blocked his phone number, making it impossible for him to contact them. Sahu then sought assistance from the cyber police.

In response to his complaint, police opened an investigation and apprehended the fraudsters who were operating out of Balasore. More research is being conducted.
