Nuapada: The headmaster and three other teachers of a government high school in Odisha's Nuapada district were suspended for dereliction of duty on Tuesday, a day after a Class III student drowned during lunch break.

The action was taken after a Class III boy from the Upgrade High School at Budhapada in the district's Boden block died in a mishap during the school day.

According to sources, the district education officer (DEO) suspended school headmaster Rajendra Joshi and assistant teachers Kishore Sahu, Hingula Majhi, and Lochan Behera for dereliction of duty.

After a student at the school drowned in a nearby canal, enraged villagers staged a protest and imprisoned the teachers. Keshab Jagat, the deceased student, has been identified.

The incident occurred when Keshab and some students went to take a bath in the canal. However, he drowned while bathing in the canal.

Following the incident, the area was tense. Irate villagers allegedly locked up as many as four school teachers inside a classroom for six hours, holding them responsible for the boy's death. They also demanded that the teachers be suspended, that adequate compensation be paid, and that a family member of the deceased student be given a job.
