Paralakhemundi: The Crime Branch began questioning five people on Monday, two days after taking over the inquiry into the death of Paralakhemundi Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Soumya Ranjan Mohapatra.

According to sources, at the first floor of the Paralakhemundi Town police station, a four-member Crime Branch team led by DSP Gyana Ranjan Mishra has began questioning five forest employees, including two ACFs, two forest guards, and the cook Manmath Kumbha.

The cook, who was present at the deceased ACF's official residence on the night of July 12 when he was rescued with over 90% burns, was questioned by the Crime Branch. Soumya died the next day in a Cuttak private hospital.

According to Crime Branch sources, the cook was sleeping at ACF Bhaskar Rao's official apartment, where he is also being interrogated with his colleague ACF Gouri Prasad Rath.

The DFO, Sangram Keshari Behera, would also be questioned in the evening, according to the sources.

Notably, Soumya Ranjan's family claimed that her death was premeditated murder, pointing accusing fingers at the DFO, the cook, and Bidyabharati Panda (wife), all of whom were identified in her complaint.
