Puri: The Puri district administration commenced destruction of private structures within a 75-meter safety zone surrounding the 12th century Sri Jagannath Temple on Monday.

The government have already evicted 95% of land inhabited by private persons and institutions in order to permit the start of work on the Heritage Corridor project surrounding Srimandir. Three private buildings in Ganduachauran Chhack under Baseli Sahi Mouza, near to the Srimandir, were bulldozed by officials escorted by a platoon of police and a JCB machine.

Currently, a portion of the temple land occupied by private individuals is embroiled in a number of legal battles before the Odisha High Court. Several other claimants are in talks with Revenue officials to reach an amicable settlement with adequate remuneration. Only once the ongoing cases are resolved is the Heritage Corridor project anticipated to move forward.
