Bhubaneswar: Late Wednesday night, armed miscreants assaulted and plundered the family of a businessman and BJP leader in the city.

Around 10 miscreants with masks, clothing, and helmets forcibly entered the house of businessman Dinabandhu Dash at Bhotapada under Mancheshwar police station at around 2 a.m., according to police sources.

During the 1.5-hour heist, the crooks tied Dash, his wife, and his daughter with a rope and beat them up. Dash's wife was hurt when an iron rod was used to beat her in the head.

The burglars entered the property by scaling the backside boundary wall, according to Das' police report. Others stood vigil outside while 5-6 miscreants entered. He said that they were armed with a hammer, a pistol, an iron rod, and a dagger-like weapon.

Despite Dash's wife's claim that they didn't recognise them, the criminals knew their names and other data. "The gang's leader, Tukuna, described himself as a man in his early 30s and said the cops would do nothing to him. He also stated that they had accepted a'supari' (death contract) for us, but that they were sparing us," she explained.

He also threatened to kill the entire family if Dash did not halt his political activities, she alleged. The crooks made off with gold jewellery worth Rs 30 lakh and Rs 3 lakh in cash before fleeing.

When the police were notified, they arrived on the scene and began an investigation. "We're looking into everything to acquire the details and will apprehend them soon," a senior police official said.
