Crocodile carcass found in Mahanadi
Sambalpur: In Sambalpur, Odisha, on Monday, a dead eight-foot-long saltwater gharial with a GPS tracking device attached was discovered floating in the Mahanadi river.
The gharial was discovered by several locals who had gone fishing in the river and was reported to forest officials. The fishermen encountered the gharial after leaving their boat and starting to walk a short distance. They initially believed it to be alive and became alarmed before realising it was dead. Forestry officials were then notified by the residents.
According to a television channel's interview with a forest official, it most likely originated in Satkosia Gorge. He claimed that occasionally, gharials from the Satkosia Gorge travel all the way to Anikut before returning.
The Satakosia Forest Department appears to have implanted the GPS, according to early investigation.
To determine the exact cause of death, the body was sent for an autopsy.
