Odisha: 338 DLs suspended for drunk driving

Cuttack: Between September 7 and September 9, as part of a countrywide drive by the State Transport Authority, 599 people were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, 338 driving licences were confiscated for suspension, and 222 drunk drivers were arrested (STA).

455 prosecution reports in total have been delivered to the courts for further action. In addition, 1,568 instances of violations of the Motor Vehicle Act have been found. A total of 1,532 e-challans for various offences were issued.

Although there are severe laws and restrictions, drunk driving is still one of the main causes of accidents on the roads in India. In Odisha, alcohol driving was a contributing factor in as many as 246 traffic accidents in 2021. These accidents resulted in 151 injuries and a total death toll of 79.
