De-addiction centre owner forces inmate to lick his feet in Odisha; held
Mayurbhanj: In the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, the owner of a de-addiction facility has allegedly assaulted, humiliated, and forced a physically challenged inmate to kiss his feet.
In a video, the owner, named as Abani Pati, is seen brutally and inhumanely striking the prisoner with PVC pipe. According to police officials, the video also showed the prisoner being made to lick Pati's feet as a form of corporal punishment at the Baripada drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility.
The police acted swiftly and detained Pati and his accomplice Pitabas Roul after the scene's viral social media video sparked fury among the general public. The centre run by a welfare trust, Pratigyan Nisa Nibarana Kendra, was under Pati's care.
Following a complaint from a nonprofit organisation, the police filed a case against the two under various IPC provisions. According to accounts, the center's entire population has been relocated.
According to the authorities, Pati has four pending criminal charges, one of which involves narcotics possession. The de-addiction centre was run by the Health department, according to district social security officer Narayan Behera.
According to sources, the center's licence was revoked in 2017 because it was not registered under the Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act of 2010 at the time it was operating. The center's Facebook page identified Pati as a motivational speaker. According to sources, the predecessor of Roul, who is thought to be managing a similar centre in the neighbourhood, is being vetted.
