Forest Guard trampled to death in Mayurbhanj

Baripada: On Monday night, a Forest Guard was mauled to death by a wild elephant while attempting to drive a herd away in the region.

A herd of elephants entered the forest near Baunsuli hamlet in the Rasgovindpur forest area at night, according to sources. The villagers alerted Forest officials after noticing the herd.

Chandrakant Rout, the forest guard in command of the Amarda forest beat house, entered the jungle and attempted to drive the herd away. However, an elephant from the herd grabbed him and trampled him.

After the herd had left, the people rescued Rout and took him to Rasgovindpur Hospital. The Forest Guard was transferred to the District Headquarters Hospital as his condition worsened. However, he died in the hospital while seeking treatment.

Rout's death in the elephant attack has caused concern in the village, as the herd has been wandering around the neighbouring forest for several days. Villagers have petitioned Forest officials to force the elephant herd out of the Rsgovindpur forest tract, fearing an attack.
