Former Odisha CM Hemananda Biswal passes away

Bhubaneswar: Hemananda Biswal, the former Chief Minister of Odisha, passes away on Friday at Sum Hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 82 years old at the time of his death. His daughter Sunita informed the media. 

Biswal served as the Chief Minister of Odisha twice- from December 7, 1989, to March 5, 1990, and from December 6, 1999, to March 5, 2000.

Hemananda Bishwal was born on December 1, 1939 in the village of Thakurpada in Jharsuguda district. According to the information, he fell ill in his hometown and was later admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment. 

He entered politics as Kirmira Panchayat Samiti Chairman in 1967. Biswal joined the Congress in 1972. He was elected to the Odisha Legislative as an MLA six times from Laikera constituency in Jharsuguda district. 

He was the Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the Congress government from March 1985 to December 1986. Hemananda did his duty perfectly as the Chairman of the Pradesh Congress Committee from May 6, 1998, to December 27, 1999. From March 1995 to May 1998, he was the Deputy Chief Minister in the government of Janaki Ballabh Patnaik. 

Hemananda's death has left a void in the political arena. Shadows of mourning have been cast in various palaces.

General secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Odisha in-charge A Chellakumar has also been saddened to hear his demise and has expressed his condolences.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik expressed condolence on his Twitter handle. "Sad to hear about the demise of former Odisha CM and senior Congress leader, Shri Hemananda Biswal. He stood for Congress party’s ideals throughout his life. @INCOdisha will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences to his family. Om Shanti".

Cuttack District Congress Committee President Manas Choudhury also twitted, "Sad to hear that former Odisha CM Hemananda Biswal has passed away today. My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones".
