Berhampur: During the celebration of Sital Sasthi in Odisha's Ganjam district, a former sarpanch and two associates were seriously assaulted by miscreants.
According to sources, Manoj Sethi, the former sarpanch of Maisakhali panchayat, went to the Sital Sasthi festival in Maisakhali village under the Sadar police station on Monday night with two accomplices. Around 20 miscreants attacked Manoj and his colleagues with swords and other sharp weapons after finding them in a lonely location away from the celebration.
The people raced to their aid as Manoj and his associates yelled for help, but the miscreants managed to flee the area. The former sarpanch was taken to MKCH Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after suffering significant head injuries in the incident. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to a hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Shankar Jena and Durga Prasad Pradhan, two of Manoj's associates, are being treated at MKCG Hospital.
After Manoj's family filed a report about the incident, authorities opened an investigation and launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators.
