Gobinda Sahu suicide case: Wife cries foul, lodges FIR

Bhubaneswar: Even as the purported suicide of Gobinda Sahu, the principal culprit in the Mamita Meher murder case, has taken on political significance, with opposition parties seeking a CBI investigation, his family claims he was murdered.

Susama Sahu, Gobinda's wife, told the media shortly after the news of his suicide was broadcast on local TV networks that she had spoken to her husband around 11 a.m. on Monday. "He inquired about the health of our boy and his mother. He also stated that he was doing well within the prison."

"My husband was a mentally powerful individual. Why would he kill himself? There was no reason for him to go to such lengths. Since he was imprisoned, it is the police and jail authorities' responsibility to secure his safety. He was the victim of a well-planned effort to eliminate him by important persons involved in the Mamita murder case," she claimed.

She also stated that she will submit a police report alleging Gobinda's murder and request a high-level investigation into the occurrence.

Earlier in the day, the opposition BJP and Congress demanded a CBI investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gobinda's death, citing a huge plot. Basanta Panda, a senior BJP leader and MP, claimed Gobinda's death in a peculiar state has sparked suspicion because he was scheduled to appear in court later that day.

He believed that Sahu was eliminated as part of a larger conspiracy to save high-profile figures in the case, and he demanded a high-level investigation into the occurrence to determine whether it was a case of murder or suicide.

Santosh Singh Saluja, a senior Congress leader and MLA, also said there was a large conspiracy behind Sahu's death to protect key persons, including the former minister. He believes it is a murder rather than a suicide. Both the BJP and the Congress have stated that a CBI investigation into the incident will reveal the truth.

Meanwhile, Sunil Kumar Bansal, the Director General of Police (DGP), has ordered a Crime Branch investigation into Gobinda's death.

On Tuesday, Gobinda attempted suicide by hanging himself inside Kantabanji jail in Bolangir district. He was taken to a hospital, but doctors proclaimed him dead.
