Birendra Lakra Set eyes for Tokyo Olympics
Rourkela: On June 18, Birendra Lakra breathed a sigh of relief when he learned that he had been selected for the 16-member Indian men's hockey team for the Tokyo Olympics. Despite being the Indian team's impenetrable wall, he was facing strong competition from younger players.
The Odisha defender claimed that the Indian team's bench strength has improved to the point where no player can take his spot in the lineup for granted.
“Even though I am one of the team's most experienced players, my spot was not guaranteed. Each job has a lot of competition, which keeps us all on our toes,” Birendra told the media.
Birendra, who first competed in the Olympics in 2012 in London, has had to wait a long time for his second appearance after missing the 2016 Rio Games due to a ligament damage in his right knee.
“I was disappointed to miss the Rio Olympics, but I was not physically prepared for such a significant event. He stated, "The team's interest comes before personal glory."
Birendra has not only earned the trust of the selectors, but he has also been picked as one of the vice-captains.
“It gives me great pleasure. We simply hope that our hard work and sacrifices are rewarded with a medal,” he expressed his wish.
After missing the 2016 Olympics, Birendra had a difficult time. Birendra, who is quiet and composed, took his time recovering from his injury before focusing on the Tokyo Olympics.
He worked tirelessly and earnestly to make a comeback, and within a year, he was back in the national squad.
Birendra, a 31-year-old veteran of 197 international matches, has been a key component in India's defence in recent years.
