Journalist Leg-Cuffed In Balasore: Havildar Suspended

Balasore: The havildar in-charge of the police custody party has been suspended after orders from Odisha DGP Sunil Bansal, a day after a journalist was shackled to his hospital bed by police while seeking treatment here.

Lokanath Dalei is a journalist that works for a local news channel. He was eventually released after the act was widely condemned by journalists, lawmakers, and people from all walks of life.

According to sources, IIC Draupadi Das of the Nilagiri police station ordered the journalist to be legcuffed and taken to the hospital bed. Dalei was taken to the hospital after the IIC of Nilagiri police station allegedly beat him after he was summoned in connection with a charge of abusing and assaulting a Home Guard.

Questions have been raised as to why the IIC was not sanctioned and just a havildar was placed on leave.
