Berhampur: On Saturday, police in Gajapati district captured a live pangolin and arrested two people for allegedly smuggling the exotic species, two days after an STF team made a similar seizure in Mayurbhanj.

A team of Adaba police in Ganjam district, together with Forest department officials, raided Gurujholi hamlet in Gajapati district after receiving information about a deal to transport the live pangolin.

During the raid, the squad captured the pangolin and apprehended the two suspects. According to sources, the seized animal weighed 15 kilogrammes.

The two people have been charged for violating the Wildlife Protection Act, 1072, by the police. They've also opened a new inquiry to see if there are any additional people involved.

On Thursday, a Special Task Force (STF) team seized a live pangolin near Satkosia-Nalda road in Mayurbhanj district and detained one person for allegedly transporting the rare species.
