LSS President meets with Naveen and demands a monthly pension for Odisha leaders imprisoned

Bhubaneswar: The Loktantra Senani Sangh (LSS) has requested a monthly stipend and felicitation for Odisha leaders imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and Defence of India Rules during the Emergency (DIR).

On a visit to New Delhi, LSS President and MP Kailash Soni raised the issue with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Political elites and ordinary citizens arrested under MISA and DIR during the Emergency from 1975 to 1977 are awarded monthly pensions and other benefits in 11 states, according to Soni.

During the Emergency, Naveen's father, famed Odisha leader Biju Patnaik, was imprisoned for a long time, which is regarded a dark episode in Indian democracy's history. He stated that the government of Odisha's neighbour Madhya Pradesh pays such democratic warriors a monthly pension of Rs 25,000.

During his meeting with the Odisha chief minister, Soni was accompanied by six MPs, including Prasanna Acharya and Amar Patnaik from the state.

After hearing Soni's request, Naveen told him that he would investigate the case thoroughly and take the appropriate steps.

It should be recalled that in 2020, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar wrote to Naveen, requesting compensation and acknowledgement for victims of the Emergency.
