Mentally Challenged Man Climbs Atop 60-Ft Telecom Tower in Sundergarh
Sundergarh: On Monday night, panic broke out in a village in the district when a man believed to be mentally challenged climbed a telecom transmission tower and remained on it for four hours before being rescued.
According to sources, a guy in his 40s went to the top of a 60-foot telecom tower in Olhani village, which is under Hatibari police jurisdiction, in the evening.
The residents alerted the police and the Fire Brigade after failing to persuade him to get down and fearing that he might fall to his death. Police and firefighters also attempted to persuade the man, who was not a town resident, to come down safely.
The village was filled with tension as the man remained atop the tower. For nearly four hours, residents, police, and firefighters tried to persuade the man.
Four firefighters climbed the tower and safely pulled him down after he did not reply to them.
Because he could not satisfactorily respond to their queries, the authorities accused him of being mentally challenged. Police later admitted him to the local community health centre and began an inquiry to determine his identification.
