Cuttack: Vehicle movement will be prohibited on the T-bridge leading to the Singhanathdev temple in the Badamba area of Odisha's Cuttack district during the Jagara Jatra on Shivaratri, following a stampede that killed one woman and injured eight others last month.

According to sources, no vehicles will be permitted on the Badamba-Gopinathpur bridge over the Mahanadi to the shrine during Jagara Jatra on February 18, as a large number of devotees flock to the temple every year during Shivaratri.

Vehicle traffic on the bridge will be prohibited from 4 a.m. on February 18 to 7 a.m. on February 19. They said that devotees can access the shrine via the road beneath the bridge.

The ban comes three weeks after a 45-year-old woman was killed and eight others, including several children, were injured in a stampede on the Badamba-Gopinathpur bridge during the Makar Mela on January 14.

Following the incident, authorities restricted people's access to the 3.4km-long T-bridge, which connects the Singhanath shrine in the middle of the river, and cancelled all scheduled events. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will dedicate the bridge in December 2021.
