Over 30 injured in explosion during fireworks competition in Odisha
Kendrapada: A firecracker explosion at Balia Bazaar in Odisha's Kendrapada district during Lord Kartikeswar's immersion ceremony on Wednesday injured more than 40 people.
According to sources, at the immersion venue in Balia Bazaar, there was a firecracker-bursting rivalry between several puja pandals. A spark from a firework landed on a pile of stored firecrackers, causing them to explode and injure the people.
All of the injured have been taken to Kendrapada's district headquarters hospital (DHH). Around 33 persons were injured and were originally treated at the DHH before being transferred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
According to SCB emergency officer Bhubananda Maharana, at least ten critically injured people have been taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) with 80-90 percent burns and are being treated by a special team of specialists.
"There are 30 men and three women among the 30 critically injured." Five surgeons from the hospital's plastic surgery department began their therapy with their colleagues. "All preparations, including ICU beds and first aid treatment, were prepared by SCB authorities," SCB Administrative Officer Abinash Rout informed the reporters.
Meanwhile, Kendrapada MLA Shashi Bhusan Behera visited the accident victims and assessed the medical treatment, wishing everyone a rapid recovery.
"According to our early information, the accident was caused by firecrackers during the immersion ceremony," said Kendrapada Collector Amrit Ruturaj. We will take harsh punishment against anybody found guilty after a thorough investigation by police and other authorities."
"There was no authorization for blowing crackers during the immersion ceremony," stated Police IG (Central Range) Narasingha Bhol after the preliminary probe. Fireworks were set off without a police permit. The perpetrators will face severe punishment."
