It is important to note that the Sambalpur and Bargarh districts in Odisha have been granted a special local holiday for the day after Nuakhai on September 2 (Friday).
In Odisha, which is famed for celebrating 13 festivals in a year as commonly proverbialized by "Bara Massa re Teraa Parva," there is an annual harvest festival known as Nuakhai. Nuakhai's literal meaning is "New" and "eating," respectively.
The celebration is held to celebrate the arrival of the new rice crop. The day following the Ganesh Chaturthi celebration, it is observed on panchami tithi (the fifth day) of the lunar fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada or Bhadraba (August-September). Other names for Nuakhai include "Nuakhai Parab" and "Nuakahi Bhetghat."
This festival's oral history stretches back to the 12th century, when Chauvan Raja Ramai Deo observed it at Patanagarh in the Balangir district of Odisha.
