Teachers in Sundargarh ask for more time to participate in election duties
Rourkela: Recognizing the difficulties they are likely to face, the Sundargarh section of the Odisha Secondary School Teachers' Association (OSSTA) requested sufficient time from the district administration on Friday to report for duty.
On February 9, the OSSTA wrote to the State Election Commission in this regard. Following this, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Khurda district administrations, as well as a few other district administrations, appear to have extended the poll duty joining time by a day.
Teachers on election duty, according to District OSSTA secretary Santosh Nayak, are a harried lot due to the hectic schedule assigned to them. He also stated that the Sundargarh administration has not yet made a decision on the matter.
The election commission has directed that teachers from outlying areas report to their respective block offices by 7 a.m. on the day of the election. After completing the necessary formalities, the teachers were tasked with collecting polling materials and making their way to respective polling stations in remote locations by the evening. Then, according to the media, arrangements such as the creation of voting compartments, the marking of prohibited and voting areas, the display of voter lists, and so on must be made.
Each presiding officer has been tasked with signing at least 1,200 ballot papers and beginning voting by 7 a.m. the next morning, according to Nayak.
According to Nayak, some teachers from Bonai block have been assigned to election duty in Hemgir block, which is more than 210 kilometres away, while a few lady teachers from Balishankara block have been assigned to Lathikata, which is more than 135 kilometres away.
