Three killed, 12 injured as SUV rams into wedding procession in Ganjam
Berhampur: Three girls were killed and 15 others were injured late Tuesday when a speeding SUV crashed into wedding revellers in Mandiapalli, under the Gopalpur police limits in Odisha's Ganjam district.
The deceased have been identified as Swapna Reddy (22), Manju Reddy (23), and Bharati Reddy (12) of Kesab Nagar in Lanjipalli, Berhampur. All of the injured were taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in this city. Two of them were later transferred in critical condition to Visakhapatnam.
According to sources, the accident occurred around 1 a.m. when 50 members of the bride's family were standing on the road to greet the bridegroom. The SUV was traveling at around 110 to 120 km per hour when the driver, who was allegedly inebriated, rammed into the verandah of a house in Mandiapali village.
While the enraged villagers apprehended one of the passengers in the SUV, the driver escaped.
Last night, the deceased went to the wedding.
The police are investigating the case.
