Bhubaneswar: Eight locations in Odisha recorded temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or higher before noon on Monday, with Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda recording the highest temperatures of 37.2 degrees Celsius each.

By 11.30 a.m., the temperature had reached 37 degrees Celsius in Balasore, 36 degrees Celsius in Sambalpur and Hirakud, 35.4 degrees Celsius in Keonjhar, and 35 degrees Celsius in Gopalpur and Puri, according to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre.

At 8.30 a.m., Bhubaneswar had a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius. By 2.30 p.m., the temperature in the state capital had risen to 39 degrees Celsius, while Jharsuguda and Sambalpur had recorded the highest temperatures of 39.6 degrees Celsius each, followed by Chandbali (39), Hirakud (37.6), Balasore (36.6), and Keonjhar (36.6). The daytime temperature in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack is expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius, and the hot and humid conditions are expected to last for the next seven days.

Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a temperature increase in several parts of the country over the next five days. "A significantly higher number of heatwave days are predicted over parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana," said Mrutyunjay Mahapatra, Director General of the IMD.

According to forecasters, the normal temperature in many parts of the state could reach 40 degrees Celsius by April 12. "There has been a decrease in thunderstorm activity, which will result in an increase in day temperature by 2 to 3 degrees at some locations over the next two to three days," said Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Scientist Umasankar Das to the media.
