Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Tankadhar Tripathy as its candidate for the May 10 by-election in Jharsuguda.

Last night, the BJP's Central Election Committee announced his candidacy.

Tankadhar, a former president of the BJP Yuva Morcha and current BJP state secretary, will run in his first assembly election. The 41-year-old law graduate began his political career as a student leader with the ABVP and has been politically active in his hometown of Jharsuguda.

However, he is not the only newcomer in this byelection. Deepali Das, daughter of Naba Kishore Das, whose death prompted the bypoll, is the BJD's candidate, while Tarun Pandey, son of three-time former Jharsuguda MLA Biren Pandey, is the Congress' nominee. The Kalinga Sena, led by youth leader Mahendra Patnaik, will also run.

This bypoll, which will almost certainly be the last before the next Odisha assembly elections, will most likely set the tone for the 'Big Battle' in 2024.

The nomination period for the byelection began on April 13 and will end on April 20.
