Sambalpur: To control the rising water level at Hirakud Dam in Odisha's Sambalpur, officials opened four more reservoir sluice gates on Tuesday, bringing the total to 12 (Left-8, Right-4).

At 9 a.m., the reservoir's water level was 614.04 cubic feet, compared to its capacity of 630 cubic feet. According to sources, the current inflow into the dam is 1,50,799 cusecs, while the outflow is 1,58,825 cusecs.

On Sunday, the reservoir's first floodwater was released through five gates, three on the left spillway and two on the right.

Following an increase in rainfall in the upper catchment and a subsequent rise in the dam's water level, three more gates were opened on Monday.

Ananda Chandra Sahoo, chief engineer of the Upper Mahanadi Basin, previously told the media that the goal was to keep the water level at 605 feet by July 31.

Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh between July 25 and July 29. Isolated very heavy rain is also expected over Chhattisgarh on July 26 and 27.

The state's average rainfall in the last 24 hours was 6.4 mm. The highest rainfall of 74.0 mm was recorded in the Koraput district's Kotpad block. With a low pressure system over westcentral India and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha intensifying into a depression in the next 24 hours, the Met office has issued orange and yellow warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some districts for two days.
